Join Shane Keating, candidate for Ward 12 Alderman, along with hundreds of Calgarians, as they attempt to break a Guinness World Record for the Most People Hugging for One Minute in the Hug Your Community Event on Saturday, September 18, 2010.

The event is a family themed affair filled with games, food, music, an obstacle course, bouncy houses and more which will culminate with the Guinness World Record attempt for the Most People Hugging for One Minute.

"I won't wait until after the election to prove my commitment to this city. I will work now to bring the communities together, to lead by example and prove that the power of a few can do great things. One person alone will not achieve this goal. Many people coming together for one cause will create history".

"I am applying for the job of Alderman for Ward 12. Although it is a one person position, no Alderman can possibly hope to do that job by himself. In order for Ward 12, and the City of Calgary to flourish, we need everyone to get involved, and in this case, have a lot of fun doing it".

"My campaign will not profit from this event. All funds raised from the admission price ($4.00 per person) is being donated back to each participating community association in Ward 12"

The festivities go from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm with the record attempt taking place at 2:30 pm in the field adjacent to St. Albert the Great School in McKenzie Towne.

The previous record of 112 people (56 couples), set in 2009, was just recently broken in Thailand with just 4,000 people hugging for 60 seconds. We can, with your help, look to break that new record! Let's show our western spirit Calgary ... let's get in the record books!

"Fraud, mismanagement and distrust should never be used to describe any aspect of city hall. Too many things are being done the way they always have been and it's time for that to change. I am aspiring to earn the job of Alderman for Ward 12 in this year's Civic election. My name is Shane Keating."

Shane, an accomplished educator of 31 years, a father of six children and five grandchildren, has lived in Ward 12 with his wife since 1997 and has been actively involved in numerous community associations.

• Shepard Area Structure Community Advisory member

• Shepard Enmax Power Community Advisory member

• South East Calgary Recreational Society member

• Shepard Community Association President

• FIRMM Foundation Founder (a non-profit society dedicated to honouring the Canadian Forces and its fallen soldiers)

My goals as alderman are my promises to the community. I will explore alternative solutions for community services rather than rely on the usual it's "our policy" and "that's how it has always been done" rhetoric.

I will seek creative methods to streamline processes to identify and fulfil the community's needs. I will support and encourage a viable business community and do all that I can to ensure that our local businesses can contribute to our thriving city.

I will promote fiscal responsibility to ensure our taxes remain in-line with the residential services we require to facilitate a growing City. I stand for an open and transparent City Council where the Administration and Council members must show concise and clear detailing of expenses and budgets.

My commitment to Calgary, and all of my neighbours in Ward 12, is to be the best that I can be in all aspects of the job as your Alderman. I will think outside of the box, and ask, why does it have to be that way and how can we make it better?"

*Ward 12 in Southeast Calgary is made up of Auburn Bay, Copperfield, Cranston, McKenzie Lake, McKenzie Towne, Douglasdale/Glen, Shepard, Mahogany Bay, New Brighton and Seton
